You’d Be ‘Foolish’ Not To Listen

Alexandra Jayne gives The Tab all the gossip on her first studio single

| UPDATED

Hard work certainly does not go unnoticed, and that is exactly the case for budding new talent Alexandra Jayne.

The UoL 2nd year Psychology student had success back in January as she reached the grand final of prestigious singing competition, Open Mic UK. Since then, she’s been gaining popularity through countless gigs in Liverpool and has now released her first studio single: ‘Foolish’.

When speaking to Alexandra Jayne about her new track, she said:

“It is a song I wrote myself and recorded at Born in a Barn Studios in Warwickshire. I sang and played guitar parts on the track and luckily I have a good friend, Jack (the lad!) who’s a professional drummer and was up for playing on Foolish, he’s brilliant.”

“I’m constantly writing, whether that’s back at home on Smithdown or on the 86 into town – inspiration can come from the most random places! Sometimes you come up with something and it just sticks in your head, I played Foolish to my friends, family and then at gigs and it proved popular so I knew it was worth recording.

“I won my studio time by reaching the final of Open Mic UK which was back in January. It was a nationwide competition which gave me the chance to play the NEC and O2 in London, as well as win a day in the studio so I definitely got a lot out of it!”

Intimidating much?

“Going into the studio is always such a great experience – to hear something you’ve written come together as a proper song. We started off recording Jack’s drums, it’s always difficult to get the right sound so that can take a few hours! I then played the various guitar parts over the top, the bass was filled in and finally the lead guitar – I’m no Hendrix so it took several attempts and a lot of patience to get the takes!

“We finished with vocals, this was a lengthy process, I sang the song over and over again, changing little parts that didn’t sound right – I’m such a perfectionist so I’m always wanting to get a better take. After I’d sung the harmonies that was a wrap and we were ready to start mixing! After the final tweaks on the song it was all done, very exciting to have an actual copy of your song on CD!”

Alexandra loves Liverpool’s music scene, and has played many gigs alongside fellow student successes, such as Great Plain Sundance.

Alexandra’s now looking forward to getting her exams out of the way (aren’t we all?) so she can pursue her summer plans. She said:

“I’ve got lots of gigging/writing plans for the summer. I’ve got some basic studio equipment at home so can often be found in the kitchen just recording randomness! I’m also working with a good friend of mine DeBate music on a remix of Foolish which should be released soon so watch this space!”
