Liverpool John Moores University to introduce ‘Scouse Studies’ degree

John Moores are set to introduce a undergraduate course in September called ‘Scouse Studies’ which will cover all aspects of Liverpool life and heritage.

JMU lies below the University of Liverpool, both on the league tables and geographically, but they are hoping this new degree will set them out from courses UoL offers.

The new degree is said to commence in September of the academic term 2015/6, will take three years and aims to teach the vast history of Liverpool. It will explore the darker aspects such as the slave trade, to the more positive attributes like The Beatles.

One source said: “We want to teach students what the real Liverpool is all about, debunking the negative stereotypes that surround the city.”

Introduction of the new degree will bring some colour to the university

The degree, although yet to be confirmed, will offer modules on a variety of Liverpool topics:

• Ancient Rivalries – tracing the two leading Liverpool football club’s history of conflict and glory
• Borders and Boundaries – the changing geography of Liverpool from the 19th Century to today
• The Capital of Culture – why Liverpool won this prestigious award and its impact on the city
• The Scouse economy – how Liverpool became one of the core economies of the North West and how industry developed from maritime to modern
• Scouse Songs – the changing face of the Liverpool music scene during the 1960s and how its legacy is still felt in the city half a century later

Students will learn to love everything about Liverpool, even the weather!

One prospective undergraduate at JMU told The Tab:

“I’m thinking of switching my course now. I’ve always wanted to know everything about Liverpool and this course seems like it could put me on the right track.”

In their final year, undergraduates will have to submit not only a dissertation, but also participate in field trips around the city including the famous Albert Docks, the Ferry across the Mersey and Aintree.

Graduates will receive a BA Hons in Scouse Studies after demonstrating theoretical and practical research on the course.

This new degree is the only one in the world of its type, promising to attract a lot of attention.

The entry requirements are not unlike those for other courses as the university want to make it as accessible as possible.

The applicant will be required to have at least two A Levels amounting to 280 UCAS points or equivalent.
