508 sex offenders are living in Liverpool

Hundreds of sex offenders are living in the same area as students. 

250 convicted sex offenders live in the Sefton area.

According to new figures, Merseyside is home to nearly 1,300 convicted sex offenders, 250 of which live around the Sefton borough/

This means that 102 out of every 100,000 in Sefton have been convicted of a sexual offence. That is 0.1% of the population.

The figures breakdown Merseyside into the following areas:

Liverpool -508

Sefton – 250

Wirral – 304

Knowsley and St Helens – 208

Even though Hull, on the opposite side of the country, has the highest number of sex offenders in the UK (174 in 100,000), it still makes residents anxious knowing there are sex offenders living in their area, no matter how many.

Jane Kennedy, Merseyside’s Police Commissioner said: “This issue causes deep anxiety in the minds of the public.

“I am confident Merseyside police have effective and rigorous procedures in place to manage these offenders.

“This is the whole purpose of the register and the requirement for offenders to maintain contact with the authorities.”

The movements of the convicted perverts, paedophiles and rapists are all monitored, and they are on the sex offenders register.

Detective Superintendent Tim Keelan, from Merseyside Police, said: “Whilst people will understandably be concerned about offenders living in communities, I want to reassure the public that we have the right measures in place and highly trained specialists working daily to prevent harm.

“Merseyside Police works in conjunction with prison and probation services as well as other partner agencies to ensure that sex offenders are carefully managed in line with strict procedures in order to mitigate risk to the public.

Jane Kennedy added: “All victims of sexual abuse should feel confident to come forward and report crimes knowing they will be listened to and supported and offenders will be brought to justice. No-one should suffer in silence.”

Police Chiefs understand that this is a cause for concern for many people but are working hard to reduce risk to the public.
