Bumper nightclub is closing down

Freshers joining Liverpool University this September will miss out on a boss ‘pool night out, with Bumper nightclub today posting on its social media accounts the morbid message “Bumper 2004-2016”.

Bumper addicts were given mixed messages however, with a second post hinting at new beginnings, whether a rebrand or something else, it wasn’t clear. The Bumper team wrote “We lived and loved #timeforanewbeginning #whosin?”, suggesting that all is not lost for lovers of Tuesday night Dirty Antics.

A third message was then posted saying: “Tomorrow night is the last night folks. Please come and say your farewells to Bumper – she was a cracker!”.

The two posts came after a video was released on their social media account on the 6th of August that appeared to show some reminiscing retro photos of the club.

Bumper was renowned for its alternative music nights, playing the likes of the Artic Monkeys and the Kaiser Chiefs in its bar and house in its back room. It was also infamous for the witty signs it used to put up above its door, which sometimes caused controversy.

People reacted with sadness of Facebook and twitter, with Maurice Stewart writing “Shame if it is the end. Bumper was the making of many good people, and great friendships” and Gerrard Banks writing “First harambe and now this!”.

Ciaran, a third year History and Politics student was more apathetic about the suspected closure: “A mediocre night club is closing – what a shame”.

This closure follows a string of independent music venues shutting down recently including The Kazimier and Cream.

Creative and brand manager Laura Harris told the Echo:“We’re sad to say that we are shutting Bumper.

“It’s a very well loved venue, and it’s been a brilliant 12 years, but the problem has become that’s it’s the last venue of the night people visit, and without that earlier evening business it just wasn’t sustainable.

She added: “we will announce the new direction for the venue”.
