Where to continue your vegan streak in Liverpool after Veganuary
Our definitive top 10 vegan restaurants
Whether it's for ethical, environmental or health reasons, there's no denying that veganism has had a meteoric rise in popularity in the last few years. No matter if you're vegan, pesci, flexitarian, or just curious, Liverpool's ever-evolving vegan food scene will have something for you.
1. Frost Burgers
Owned by influencer Monami Frost, Frost Burgers has developed a massive following both in Liverpool and on Instagram. Boasting 60k followers – and for good reason – people travel from all over the country to sample their vegan burgers, milkshakes and donuts. The Echo even claims it's better than McDonald's. You'd be mad not to give it a go.
2. Down the Hatch
Down the Hatch is one of Liverpool's most popular vegan and veggie junk food purveyors. The daytime menu has burgers, hot dogs and small plates – you can even get vegan scouse! They also have a brunch menu, do a roast on Sunday and have loads of vegan cocktails to try.
3. Woo Tan Scran
Perhaps Liverpool's best named takeaway, this offshoot of Down the Hatch is based all the way in Lark Lane – but don't worry, they've just got Deliveroo. It sells classic Chinese/chippy fare, but it's all vegan. Whether you fancy jackfruit 'duck' pancakes, a sausage supper or their salt and pepper munchie box, this isn't one to miss out on.
4. The Caledonia
Liverpool's first and only entirely vegan pub is just opposite the City of Liverpool College, so it's easy to get to if you're looking for a vegan BLT on your lunch break from uni. The menu is standard pub fare with chips, burgers and sandwiches. The standout menu item is a vegan battered mars bar – you can't get that anywhere else in the city.
5. Potts Coffee
Potts Coffee is the city centre's first entirely vegan coffee shop. Located on Slater Street, you can get a full vegan fry-up here, as well as the usual soups, salads and sandwiches. Bonus points; it's also very reasonably priced.
6. Meatless
Meatless just opened this academic year, and is one for any students who live on Smithdown and don't want to get the bus into town to have a nice lunch. As well as vegan fry-ups, burgers and desserts, there are loads of healthier options too like buddha bowls for those who are trying to fix up their diet in 2020.
7. The Nakery
It can be difficult to get vegan desserts, but this fully raw vegan bakery on Berry Street has you covered. Here you can get things like smoothies, buns, tea and cake. They also have offers on pretty frequently, so if you want to try something it's not going to hurt your bank balance too much.
8. Guac and Roll
Another one for Smithdown-based students, Guac and Roll is a vegan kitchen based inside the pub Craft Taproom. It sells loaded fries, vegan burgers and fried chicken and weekly specials, so while you're having a pint or doing a pub quiz you can try some vegan food.
9. Veggie Republic
Veggie Republic's menu has everything you would expect from an independent city centre restaurant – but it's vegan! You can expect pizza, small plates, burgers and even vegan fish and chips. It's in a basement restaurant on Cook Street, and would be a great place to go on a date or to bring visiting family to.
10. Wholesome Junkies
Wholesome Junkies, a Manchester based vegan food seller, has just started a two month residency in the Baltic Market – so get it while you can. The menu includes vegan fried chicken made with oyster mushrooms, loaded tater tots and 'beef' burgers. Featured on the BBC's Million Pound Menu, it isn't one to pass up on.
