Graduation cancelled for UoL second year running

“We deserve to celebrate our achievements”

After another unusual and disrupted year of study, it was announced earlier yesterday that an in-person graduation ceremony for final year students would once again be cancelled this year until further notice. Students will instead be offered a virtual graduation in its place, prompting anger from students.

An email sent out to all final year students after the announcement was made on the university’s twitter account stated: “we remain determined to hold in-person ceremonies, safely and in line with any Government regulations, at the earliest opportunity”.

The email also said that the cancellation of the ceremony was due to uncertainty about the next stage of the UK government’s roadmap.

The email went on: “after a hard year this is not the news you hoped to receive”.

Students were promised that ceremonies beginning to take place in the autumn and throughout the 2021-22 academic year, but this was not satisfactory for many students.

The decision has been met with backlash from students voicing their disappointment online, with a petition that has gained over 2,000 signatures that states: “we deserve this opportunity to bring together our hard work and celebrate our achievements through the pandemic.”
