Body found on Canal Street

Body in bag found in gay village canal

Police have launched an investigation after a body was found in Manchester’s gay village.

The body was found near Princess Street

A member of the public contacted the police on Sunday afternoon to report an object floating in the water which looked like a body in a bag.

Officers went to the scene and found it was indeed a body – divers then recovered it from the canal.

Police say it is too early to treat the death as suspicious, and added that they don’t yet know how long the body has been in the water.

“Enquiries are ongoing to identify the individual and establish if there are any suspicious circumstances”, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said.

An area between GAY bar and Princess Street has been cordoned off while authorities examine the scene.

The news comes days after four people were sentenced for killing a man in the same area in June last year.
