Fallowfield Sainsbury’s – really the UK’s most expensive?

We finally answer the age old question.

Anyone who lives south of the Curry Mile will be well aware of noble truth concerning a particular supermarket.

No sooner did you arrive in Manchester as a fresher, some second or third year know-it-all will have enlightened your naive little brain by telling you the best shopping tip of your life – that the Fallowfield branch of Sainsbury’s is the most expensive in the country.

But is this claim completely SAIN, or BURYed in lies?

The famous store we all know and love

Thankfully, we here at The Tab are committed to getting the truth out there for student queries big or small.

So we can confirm that the answer to this particular query is a resounding NO.

“I can tell you now that this is completely untrue”, a Sainsbury’s press officer told us.

“In fact, I think it would be illegal for us to [have different prices in different areas]. We have a national pricing policy so everything  costs the same wherever you buy it”.

“If you buy a tin of beans from any Sainsbury’s store, be that England, Scotland or Wales, you’ll pay exactly the same money”.

He did say there are “price differences” in Sainsbury’s Local stores, but anyone who’s tried (and failed) to shop on a budget at the Oxford Road local will know this.

Basics baked beans, a student favourite.

The Tab spoke to a member of the management team at Fallowfield, who was completely unaware of the rumour.

An irate store manager said, “I’ve never even heard of this rumour – I don’t know what you’re talking about”.

Sainsbury’s boss Justin King – apparently he does care about students

Why does everyone think this is the most expensive store then? Lord knows. It might be a case of people buying too much of the pricey Taste the Difference range… or just a joke that got a bit out of hand.

So there you have it – next time someone tries to be a smartypants with their Fallowfield supermarket wisdom, you can wave this article right in their faces.
