A plastic free shop is opening in Manchester SU on Monday

After a successful trial before Christmas, the Students’ Union are now permanently opening a zero waste shop for all your anti-plastic and environmental needs.

Want Not Waste's official launch will be on Monday 11th of February from 5pm onwards. The launch will be accompanied by fabulous vegan food supplied Global Source kitchen and DJs will be providing groovy beats later on.

You might find yourself spoilt for choice in the new shop which will be selling a variety of pulses, flours, cereal, nuts, pasta, sugar, spices and more.

If all the food wasn't enough to entice you, the shop will also be selling refillable household cleaning products as well as a range of goods from student business Ora's Beeswrap, handmade soaps and bodywash bars.

Want Not Waste will also be offering a recycling deposit for lush bottle tops, eco-bricks, toothpaste tubes and crisp packets.

The system in place at the shop is very simple. You can either bring your own jar or purchase a jar at the shop, the you fill it up with everything you want, then pay based on the weight.

The launch of the new shop will celebrate the opening of one of the first zero waste shops in Manchester. This follows a new demand across the country for zero waste shops and products, largely fuelled by students.

Want Not Waste follows in the footsteps of a new packaging free Lush store in Manchester City Centre, which launched last month.

According to the charity Surfers Against Sewage, every day approximately eight million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into the ocean, killing 100,000 marine mammals and one million sea birds annually.
