Newcastle and Northumbria’s Irish dance societies set to perform this weekend

This weekend, Newcastle and Northumbria’s Irish Dance societies are performing their annual show to raise money for local charities.

The show is called Treble on the Tyne and will take place at Northumbria’s Student Union on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th. Tickets are £6 on the Northumbria Student’s Union Website or £7 on the door.

All proceeds will be donated to Newcastle Women’s Aid and Newcastle West End Food Bank. The president of Northumbria’s Irish Dance society told The Tab, “these charities were chosen because during covid people have struggled more with accessing food and with the increased rate of domestic violence we felt it was important to raise money for those who need help.”

There will also be a raffle with some prizes you just can’t miss.

With influences from the iconic Riverdance production and Celtic twists on contemporary music, members will take part in a wide range of Irish dances.

The show features nearly 40 students from the two Universities, with performances from beginners up to advanced dancers.

Newcastle West End Food Bank opened in March 2013 and has since become one of England’s busiest food banks. Over 30,000 people require help from them annually, and their main focus is to help people in the West End of Newcastle, which is one of the most economically and socially deprived areas of the North East.

Newcastle Women’s Aid started in 1975 and provides telephone support lines, domestic group programs and one to one support packages for women in need. It can be found in the city centre near Northumbria University or online on their website.

St Paddy’s day is over but there’s still more Irish fun to have, so this is not an event to be missed.
