Police revoke local chippy’s license after selling drugs to kids
One of the toon’s most famous chippy’s shut down
Happy Chip has officially been shut down after selling drugs to underage teens.
The takeaway, most popular with regular Digital and Powerhouse goers, has been under scrutiny from the police for a number of years due to the suspicious way in which it was run.
The fate of the cheap-as-chips eatery has been a long time coming due to the various times they’ve wound up in court for selling Class A drugs.
In 2011 a 21-year-old girl collapsed outside the shop just 30 seconds after taking a Benzo Fury, a drug which has been criminalised since June of this year. Her condition was almost fatal but the spokesperson for the takeaway wangled himself out of the tricky situation by stating that everything sold was completely legal.
But in February the police launched a test in which they sent a 16 year old into the shop to determine the extent of the narcotics they were selling and whether they were IDing. The teen emerged carrying two bottles of poppers and a blue pill wrapped in kitchen roll.
Following the test purchasing that was conducted, a police search found a large amount of legal highs, though with many of them not containing information about what the contents really were.
A hearing on Thursday resulted in the revoking of the chippy’s license, meaning that they can no longer serve food after 11pm. This was done in a bid to ensure that other takeaways which might have the same idea just stick to selling cheesy chips and ditch the narcotics from their menu.
