UEA steals the points
UEA 2-1 Wymondham Reserves: Yellows take a narrow victory against bottom of the table Wymondham.
UEA’s footballers could be forgiven for approaching this game with confidence considering the opponent’s league record of ten straight defeats, however the Yellows complacency nearly cost them.
UEA started very poorly and though the pitch was heavy the quality of passing was not good enough all round. They have been vulnerable to conceding the opening goal in games recently making it difficult on themselves.
Wymondham’s first corner resulted in a home defender rising highest heading the ball firmly into the UEA net.
UEA began to grow into the game enjoying the majority of possessions without creating any real clear cut chances.
The first real chance for UEA came when Dingli found space behind the back four but his left-footed effort went narrowly wide.
On the stroke of half-time UEA got back on level terms, Skidmore found space at the front post to flick home from a Beeson free-kick.
It could have got better for UEA but Dingli saw his strike cannon back off the upright. It was evident at half-time that UEA were going to have to dig deep to grind out a victory.
UEA continued to dominate proceedings with Skidmore and Chapman both hitting the woodwork.
UEA were rewarded for their endeavours late on however when debutant Gwion, on as a sub for the injured Joe Moore, stole the points with an instinctive finish from outside the box.
After the win there was a sense that UEA need to respect all opponents to prevent complacency effecting performances, however they will be delighted to nick all three points at the death.
Elsewhere UEA have advanced into the quarter-finals of the Norfolk Junior Cup where they face Catfield F.C. on January 5.
