Tau Is No More…
Norwich club ‘Tau’ has been forced to change its name to ‘Mantra’.
‘Tau’, a club popular with UEA students, has had to change its name after owners of a club with the same name in Las Vegas threatened to sue.
The club will now be known as ‘Mantra’, a word used in Hinduism meaning ‘A word or sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation.’
Operations director, James Hall, says the club had no choice but to change the name:
“We became a victim of our own success really by coming to the attention of the owners of a nightclub called Tao in Las Vegas. Huge potential legal costs meant that, although we believed we could defend any action against us it was much more cost-effective and less stressful to change our name.”
Upon further enquiry from the Tab, Mantra’s General Manager, Kris McCarthy, said:
“Unfortunately, the case against Tao in Las Vegas was un-winnable as they have successfully defended their IPO before and won several times. Mantra had already spent a vast sum of money defending the name ‘Tau’ in the UK before this became apparent.”
“We as a venue are not going anywhere – we have only changed our name. The club may still be known as Tao or Tau for many years and that is down to the individual.”
“We will still continue to innovate and not imitate, and ensure we still deliver that 5 star experience that is expected out of Norwich’s Premier Hot Spot.”
Commenters on the club’s announcement on Facebook were unfazed, with one saying: “It’s a smart club whatever it’s called.”
Others, however, took to Twitter to express their disappointment. One user said: “They’ve changed Tau into Mantra… I LIKED Tau, better still be good for #ThursdayClub.” Another said: “So Tau is now called Mantra… That will take some getting used to #dontlikechange.”
