UEA FC 2nd XI win 5-2

UEAFC second XI got their BUCs campaign off to a winning start, defeating a solid Staffordshire University (Stoke) side 5-2 down at Colney.

In what were dire conditions the ‘Yellows’ had the better of the ball in the first half, heading in at the break 4-1 to the good.

Bradley Nelson led the line with aplomb, always giving the Stoke defenders something to think about and he got himself on the score-sheet twice. With UEA lining up in what looked to be a 4-2-3-1 formation of-sorts, there midfielders overloaded those of Stoke giving the ‘Yellows’ the upper hand, with the ball passed neatly between the team, allowing for numerous chances. Also getting themselves on the score-sheet were Alex Willerton, and the ever-involved Taylor Hastings.

Perhaps through a combination of a drop in concentration, and some poor finishing, UEA had a few jittery moments to contend with toward the end of the match. An unfortunate slip at the wrong moment by goalkeeper Alex Kibbey led to him picking the ball out from the back of his own net, after a hopeful shot by Stoke’s number 10.

The game looked to be wrapped up when a penalty was awarded to the ‘Yellows’, however Hastings dragged it wide. He later made up for his penalty miss by scoring with a bullet of a free-kick, making sure of the 3 points five minutes from the end.
