Students To Scrub Terraces Loos for Charity

A team of brave students will be cleaning Freshers’ loos this weekend to raise money for charity.

Students will be knocking on doors in Norfolk and Suffolk Terraces on Saturday, offering to clean residents’ toilets to raise money for water sanitation charity Dig Deep.

Infamously revolting, the Terrace bathrooms are each shared by up to seven students. It will be no easy feat for the volunteers, who hope  their efforts will not only raise money for charity but also highlight the contrast between the sanitation we enjoy here and the often dismal conditions found in East Africa.

The team of UEA students, armed with rubber gloves and a generous supply of heavy-duty bleach, are using the money to sponsor a Trek across The Great Wall Of China in aid of Dig Deep.

What horrors lurk within these walls…?

Lois Dunn, a volunteer who is leading the trek said “This might be worse than the trek itself, but we’re all just excited about raising the money, and all donations will be greatly appreciated!”

Across the world 2.5 billion people lack access to a toilet and 50% of all the hospital beds in the world are filled by people suffering from water-borne diseases. Starting in Kenya Dig Deep use small-scale, community led, sustainable, and environmentally friendly projects to bring water sanitation to some of the most deprived communities in the world.

In 2013 alone the charity created clean water supplies for over 10,000 people, including 2000 school children. The project’s main aim is to improve the health of East African’s, but sanitation projects also give communities their own autonomy, boost their economy and offer more employment opportunities and a better quality of life. This is especially true for young girls, who are often responsible for fetching water – forced to choose between clean water and an education.

Don’t forget to dig deep this Saturday!
