Is this a wine-up? Returners incensed by LCR booze price hikes

Union officers slam suppliers and chancellor Osborne for drinks price rises at Returners LCR

| UPDATED

An incensed Union officer blasted George Osborne and drinks suppliers over price hikes on previously cheap drinks at Returners LCR this week.

Chris Jarvis, Campaign and Democracy Officer at UEA Union said:”We managed to hold the price of our basic drinks offer in the LCR to £1.50 for four years, but not even the SU can stop the chancellor hiking up duty and suppliers hiking up prices.

“We had to put up the base price of things like Carling and VK by 15p to compensate.”

Why, LCR, why?

Second and third years clocked the price hike this Monday, with Jagerbombs – formerly £1.50 – rising to £2.55.

Frustrated clubbers ranted on social media at the sudden increase, with many angry that they weren’t made aware of the new pricing.

One student raged: “Could have warned us UEA”.

Some even posted on the Union’s Facebook page to complain:

Other party-goers questioned the practicality of the new prices. One clubber who wished to remain anonymous said: “Prices might have to rise every now and then but a £1.65 illogical, awkward change is going to make the job even harder for the bar staff surely.”

“Back when drinks were £1.50 it was event possible to do your pre-drinking at the bars.”

In response to students’ anger about not being consulted or made aware of the changes, Jarvis said: “Later this term we’ll be launching new ways for students to get directly involved in the running of all our services to make sure students that want a say get a say.”

Just how students will be able to “get directly involved” is not clear.

Third year Politics student Guy Gorman-Powell fumed: “Considering it’s an SU and knowing that other clubs in the city are cheaper – what is there to encourage me to go to the LCR? I don’t understand the reason behind it.

“They should have told us but we didn’t know prices were going up until we got here. It just seems a bit unfair.”
