Confirmed: The first day of UEA staff strikes set to start in two weeks time
Strikes will begin on the 1st February
Cameron NobleThe University and College Union (UCU) has confirmed that the 1st of February will mark the beginning of the next wave of strikes, affecting UEA students as staff and lecturers are set to walk out.
Over 70,000 UCU members at 150 universities will take part in the strikes, which will last for 18 days throughout February and March. Staff are in an ongoing campaign for better pay and pensions, among other things.
With three days of striking held before Christmas, the latest strikes mean that the 22-23 academic year will have see 21 days of striking so far.
Further dates for the strikes are to be announced next week.
UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: “Today our union came together to back an unprecedented programme of escalating strike action. The clock is now ticking for the sector to produce a deal or be hit with widespread disruption.
“University staff dedicate their lives to education and they want to get back to work, but that will only happen if university vice-chancellors use the vast wealth of the sector to address over a decade of falling pay, rampant insecure employment practices and devastating pension cuts. The choice is theirs.”
