What to do on Super Bowl day
Sam Farley whets our appetite for one of the highlights of the international sporting calender
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past fortnight, you’ll know that Super Bowl XLVIII is this weekend.
With The NFL’s best offense and defense locking horns, this year’s game is shaping up to be one hell of a spectacle. All season Denver Broncos quarterback, Peyton Manning, has been breaking records like they’ve been going out of fashion, and the Seattle Seahawks formidable defensive work has earned their unit the nickname “The Legion of Boom”.
Furthermore the match this year is held in New Jersey. We can expect snow and a lot of it, hopefully leading to an unpredictably frantic and frenetic game of football.
The stage is set for the brilliant and terrifying Richard Sherman
If this all whets your appetite, then get on down to the Bristol Barracuda Super Bowl party at Riley’s Bristol on Sunday 2nd February at 8pm; beer pong, food and drinks deals, and of course the big game. Even if the showpiece match isn’t to your fancy, there is the legendary half time show, this year featuring Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, an intriguing and bizarre duet in prospect.
Rileys is known for being a cheap student favourite and this year they will be pulling out all the stops to improve upon what last year was officially the biggest Super Bowl party in the South West.
Some Barracuda players were asked to put their pundit skills to the test and give their predictions for the match (names kept anonymous to save embarrassment):
MM – “Such a tough one to call. Both teams have the quality to make the difference on the day. Peyton Manning has had an unbelievable season, but often struggles on the big stage and in cold weather. Seattle by a whisker for me.”
Seattle 24-21 Denver (after overtime).
SF: “It’s got everything needed for a great game. The two best teams in football ready to go toe to toe. It really could go either way but I think Denver have the weapons in their arsenal to just nick the win. This is the matchup that all the neutrals wanted so I’m hopeful this could be one of the great Super Bowls.”
Denver 17-10
JC: “I was hoping for a showdown between Manning the the Seattle secondary, but I think the weather is going to play havoc with Denver’s passing game. The game may now be won on the ground, where I think Seattle have the edge. Anything can happen if it snows though and I reckon it’ll be a messy and gritty game.”
Seattle 20-14 Denver.
If you’re not up for going to Riley’s, then why not watch it at home and put on your own Super Bowl party?
If you’ve caught Super Bowl fever and want to experience more American Football then why not watch the Varsity between Bristol Uni and UWE on Sunday 9th February? With commentators, prize giveaways, cheerleading performances – not to mention the crunch clash itself – it is a perfect place to continue your new found love of the game.
