Sex Education season four: All the moments to catch Bristol Uni

Can you spot the Wills Memorial Building and the School of Chemistry?

One of Netflix’s biggest shows, ‘Sex Education’, has just dropped its much anticipated fourth and final season. In a special treat for Bristol students, several scenes in the latest instalment have been filmed in a variety of locations around the university campus, including the iconic Wills Memorial Building.

The hit show follows the life of young outcast Otis Milburn, played by Asa Butterfield, and his attempts to navigate the awkward struggles of growing up whilst also running a self professed ‘sex clinic’. The show gained massive popularity due to its relatability, tackling a vast range of discussions from sexual self discovery to teen pregnancy.

Although the majority of the show was filmed in Wales, eager eyed fans will spot the use of Bristol University buildings: the Wills Memorial library and the School of Chemistry.

The end of season three saw the shocking revelation that Maeve, played by Emma Mackey, would no longer be a Moordale student, instead travelling to the United States to be apart of a study programme.

In both the trailer and official Netflix photos Maeve, sat opposite new character played by Imani Yahsua, can be seen sat at one of the desks in the Wills Memorial Building.

Your favourite dark-academia library doubles as the fictional Wallace University, where Maeve now studies.

The opening scene of the show sees two people getting hot and heavy in between the book cases whilst Maeve misses her long-distance boyfriend, Otis. A great stress release during exam season, perhaps?

The School of Chemistry also makes an appearance in the latest season, acting as Cavendish College, the new school the cast must learn to navigate following the closure of Moordale in the previous season.

The School of Chemistry is used as a school canteen, with official Netflix photos showing the ‘It girl’, Ruby Matthews, played by Mimi Keene, having lunch where you suffer through your 9ams.

You may also recognise the bright multi-coloured glass sculpture outside the chemistry building, otherwise known as the Palm Temple, which represents the modern Cavendish College.

The instalment, designed by Bristol-based artist Luke Jerram, features prominently, with the Headmaster of Moordale, Michael Groff, appearing in front of it.

Corey Moore, the Senior Events Coordinator at the University of Bristol said: “It is always exciting working on large-scale filming productions across the University estate, but as a fan of Netflix’s Sex Education and knowing how popular it is globally, I was particularly proud to see parts of the University form key filming locations.

“With long hours and complex operations, this was a real team effort with members of Venues and Events working closely with colleagues across the University to be able to facilitate such a high profile production.”

The show has been a roaring success worldwide in the first few seasons, picking up the award for Best Comedy Prize at the 2022 International Emmy Awards, whilst the first season alone racked up forty million streams.

The new season of Sex Education dropped on Thursday 21st September on Netflix.
