I went on a date to a crisp sandwich café and it was weirdly good
This is the future of dating
If you’ve ever wanted to have a crisp sandwich made from handmade bread with decent ingredients, the Stock Exchange Bakery is the place for you.
I went for my Valentine’s Date, where I learned boys only want one thing. Crisp sandwiches.
The date
As a (lonely) crisp obsessive I chose the place for our date. I was excited about the prospect of not spending Valentine’s Day alone but also spending it with my long time love, crisps.
I met Dave outside the Hawthornes and could already tell he was excited for the sandwich – a good sign.
We talked about our grandmas, politics and how he had been deprived of crisps as a child. As a long time salty snack addict, I wondered how the rest of the date would go. Undeterred, we continued.
True love
The Café
After awkwardly asking if “this was the café that does the crisp sandwiches” and being told no, that was “just a pop up thing” we were ready to be disappointed.
We knew exactly what we wanted. Our eyes were on one thing only. But luckily enough the café was willing to put out. It was going to be quite the threesome.
Something else to take up my time?
Conversation was in full flow, the café was busy and the faint waft of chicken crisps was coming our way. Dave’s eyes lit up as he saw what was coming.
He undressed the sandwich with his eyes, as if he could see right through to the naked glory of the crisps hidden behind the layers of bread.
I knew he hadn’t asked me out for the pleasure of my company but the physical side – the crisp sandwich. The anticipation was killing him.
Look how excited he is
At last, the moment itself. One ham and roast chicken crisps, one cheese and ready salted. If crisps be the food of love, crunch on.
The sandwich itself was a combination of artisan bread, ham, cheese and crisps. Moist, but with a crunchy crust, it hits the spot.
The sandwich will leave you content, wallowing in a post carb glow, which if you’re lucky will last all afternoon.
With a face like this, it’s a miracle I got a date in the first place
As for the date? Well, let’s say after that performance, I’ll be seeing him again.
Maybe my Valentine’s Day might be less salty snack and more salty surprise.
