Body found in farmland confirmed as Karen Buckley’s

A 21 year old man has been arrested

Tributes are flooding in after a body found last night is confirmed as being that of missing Calendonian student Karen Buckley.

Police Scotland found the body at a farm in the north of Glasgow yesterday.

Karen, who was in her first year studying Occupational Therapy, went missing after a night out on Saturday.

A spokeswoman from Glasgow Caledonian University said yesterday: “The GCU community is deeply saddened by the police reports in the media regarding Karen Buckley.

“Our thoughts are with Karen’s family, friends and classmates at this very difficult time.

“GCU’s student support service, our academic staff, and the advice centre at the Student’s Association are available to any students who need support.”

Graham Allen, 23, who studies Environmental Civil Engineering, said: “Over the last couple of days I think it’s been so local, it’s quite distressing in a way.

“Even myself I’ve thought about it a lot — I don’t know anyone involved — but having it being a fellow student it’s certainly affected me because I can only imagine what the family and friends and coursemates are feeling at this point.

“I can definitely sense a slight shadow of some kind over the university just with the incident in general.

“It’s not been pleasant at all, I can only personally say my thoughts are entirely with the family at this point because it can’t be a nice thing at all to be going through.”

Business student Jessica Dradge, 22, from Melrose, said: “It’s terrible. It’s terrible for it to happen to anyone but someone so close — I don’t know her — but because we go to the same school it’s just terrible.

“I’ve been out in Glasgow but you just never think that will happen that close to home.

“It makes you question whether it’s even worth going out. I tend not to go out alone but I know when you get a couple of drinks in you, you think ‘Oh I’ll just walk it’, but your life is worth so much more than a taxi.”

A 21 year old man has been arrested in connection to her death.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends in this terrible time.
