£3000 raised for victims of hall blaze
Laptops with work on were burnt
A savvy campaign has raised nearly £3000 for the victims of the fire that destroyed their halls.
Shahin Munir lives in a part of the building that was not severely damaged and felt for those who had lost so much, so set up a donations page.
The 25-year-old decided to set up a campaign to raise money for those affected by the blaze.
Once she reaches her goal of £4000 she will divide it equally between the 41 students that lived in the now demolished building.
In a Facebook post Shahin commented: “Every £1 counts, I’m just trying to do my bit to help”.
The devastating fire at The Student Lodge in Radford resulted in the evacuation of the entire building, leaving many students having to temporarily be re-homed.
While nobody was hurt, thousands of pounds worth of belongings were destroyed including laptops, ID’s, passports and a whole lot of cash.
Second year Youth Studies student, Brontie Wallaard, lives in the studio flats and but her personal items only received minor smoke damage.
The 20-year-old said: “The situation was made worse by many of the affected people being international students who had only come here for a six month course, for this to happen during their short stay here must have been a horrendous experience for them.”
Over 65 firefighters were called to the scene in the Easter holidays to try and tame the flames which burnt for two days straight.
So far it is thought the blaze was started by a cigarette.
The building manager hopes to see an investigation begin in the next couple of weeks.
The accommodation was due to get 350 new residents in September- however it is not yet clear how future students will be catered for.
Shahin hopes to raise £4000 for the cause. The current total stands at£2956,50.
