Meet the Trent students campaigning to leave the EU
‘The EU is holding our country back’
Last weekend saw the arrival of the Vote Leave campaign in Nottingham and its student activists.
The day, plagued with rain, was guest to Notts TV who’s interview with Matthew Knight of the Vote Leave team and also with members of the public are still in circulation on the channel.
There were over 20 activists donating their time over the course of the day from both Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham. We caught up with a few of them to find out why they wanted out of the EU.
Matthew Knight, business management, graduated
“Whilst members of the European Union we simply have no control over our legislation, in fact it’s being made by people who can’t be voted for.”
Thomas Hewitt, post-grad Masters in newspaper journalism
” We will be able to trade with the rest of the world once we leave the EU.”
George Highton, third year ancient history
“I’ve met people who are members of all the main political parties today from solid left wing Labour voters, UKIP members and Conservatives such as myself, it shows how this campaign is much larger and more important than party politics.”
Daniel Dowson, third year biochemistry & molecular science
“You read the news, you read up about it, you join Vote Leave and you’re on the streets campaigning within days.”
Yours truly, first year politics (and Law School drop-out)
Nobody ever said politics was sexy
“The cuts that have crippled British infrastructure such as the NHS and welfare are a direct result of EU membership, we saved £44 billion in the last Parliament whilst sending £87 billion to Brussels, madness!”
The great thing about the day was the response from the public who now along with future Vote Leave campaign dates can go into the referendum in an educated fashion.
Attention was focused mostly on the EU’s negative impact on the NHS and the junior doctor strikes. Of course Nottingham is also home to two very large hospitals so it will always be a town with the NHS in mind.
The last of the leaflets was on trade and how Britain will look when we leave the EU and the “Truth About Trade Beyond the EU” showed the facts of how our trade deficit means the European Union will continue trading with us and any bullying from the EU in response to Britain leaving will not and cannot happen because we and the EU are all members of the World Trade Organisation.
Never has there been a better opportunity for Britain to move forward, and that is why activists lace the streets across Britain. The next major action day is March 12th to which everybody is “welcome to come and learn about the failed EU project”.
