What’s your true aim on a night out?
To pull or Notts to pull? Vote in our poll
We’re all aware of the stigma attached to lads and girls on a night out. But what do students from NTU really think about nights out? Is it simply an opportunity to “pull”, a vanity contest perhaps? Or is it just God forbid… a chance to let your hair down and have a fun time with your friends?
Jake Wright, Sports Science fresher
Think No.1 ruined the drinks advertisement aim…
Jake Wright, first year Sports Science, says: “My aim is actually to go out and have a good time really. But when you’re out, you do see it… some people pulling.”
So, in Nottingham are clubs like Rock City, really Rock City? Or are they just a platform for lads and girls to fulfil their impulsive desires… more like rock hard city. Are the famous Ocean Wednesdays in fact just oceans of people waiting for any opportunity to “pull”? What do other students think?
Ed Champion, Mathematics fresher
Ed Champion, 19-year-old maths fresher, agrees that going out is solely about having a good time – and, “probably ending up in McDonald’s.”
I’m sure we can all relate. Your head is spinning, engaging in meaningless chattering due to drinking one too many cocktails. A good burger or a Chunky Chicken is 100% going to sort you out.
Ed was asked what his opinion was on the stigma attached to students who go out. Are they just rowdy lads looking for trouble? Are these girls looking for attention? But, Ed says: “It doesn’t really bother me. I’m not really involved in it but yeah, sometimes, you see it. Students are sometimes vulnerable, you see older guys targeting younger girls.”
So far, “having a good night” seems to be what students are aiming to achieve.
Chloe Lauren Townsend, Sports and Education
“My aim is to go out and get drunk, but not paralytic to the point where I end up in an ambulance.”
Says Chloe Lauren Townsend, First Year, Sports and Education Undergraduate.
When Chloe was asked about whether or not she agrees with the stigma attached to both genders regarding nights out, interestingly, she contended: “No, I don’t agree with the stigma at all. You can be anyone from any background and have a good night. It’s not just students who are stigmatised. Rowdy lads aren’t the only ones who go out.”
In comparison to Jake and Ed’s views, Chloe says: “People generally do go out to pull though. Usually you see big groups of lads that are out to pull.”
From the results that have been collected, I can reveal that 40% of students agree that going out is indeed an opportunity to ‘pull’ while the remaining 60% disagree. Going out is all about “having a good night” whatever that may entail.
