Durham Student Takes Gold at The Olympic Stadium

BUCS Outdoors

This year those lucky enough to make DUAXC's team for the BUCS outdoor athletics championships were greeted with the prospect of competing in the Olympic Stadium. The weekend turned out to be one of the most successful in the club's history.

Performance of the weekend without goes to Jen Walsh. Competing in the 1500m the Castle fresher was amongst the favourites for Gold. She showed good form winning her heat and semi and continued in the same vain in the final in which she ran a Uni record 4.17.98 taking gold.

There were more good performances over the middle distances with Ed-Hickman-Casey, Jack Hillier and Briyony Bendle all making the semi final in the 800m getting PBs along the way. Both Sophie Munn and Andy Clark also competed well in the 1500m.

Meanwhile in the long distance events there was more success with Alex Robinson making the 5000m final an event in which Mike Grimes was unlucky to to proceed and Holly Page ran a PB in her heat. Pat Vis and Lucy Reid also ran well in the 10,000m both finishing in the top twenty.

In the sprint events there were good runs by Dominic WIlliams and Briony Potter in the 400m, Gareth Phillips and Isabel Hainsworth in the 100m and Maddy Raynor in the 200m. However, most impressive were star sprinter Thomas Knight who won his 200m heat in a SB 21.8 and was within tenths of a second of making the final. The men's 4x100m team should also be congratulated for setting a new club record time of 43.72.

With three club records, a gold medal and three semi-finalists it was a great weekend for DUAXC.
