They’ve been spotted wandering the streets of Durham, and now they’re counting down to 7pm on Thursday…but who are they and what are they planning?

Last Thursday there were sightings of a masked figure walking between Church Street and Grey College.

And it has certainly got Durham talking.

Witnesses at the Science Site traffic lights describe “someone with a white mask, brown hair, a long dark coat and a rucksack standing at the lights.

“Even in broad daylight it was very creepy.”

Further investigation revealed the the Facebook page White Masks Durham.

But what is this all about?

Students across the university questioned what the somewhat ominous countdown could possibly be for…

But all has finally been revealed in the latest post on their website. It’s Durham University Classical Theatre advertising their next production of course!

DUCT will be performing ‘The Trojan Women’ later this week, beginning on Thursday at 7.30pm at The Assembly Rooms.

They will be performing Euripides’ great play, a story of the woe and dignity that comes in a world beyond hope, in a challenging, powerful and original production.

And now it all makes sense – the masks, the quotes, the countdown… Suddenly White Masks Durham doesn’t seem quite as creepy as before!
