A Durham student has been banned after being caught drink driving to get to McDonald’s.

After being seen drink driving on his way to get fast food at 4am after a night out earlier this month, engineering student Thomas Leach was banned from driving for 20 months.

Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court

Police found 83mcg of alcohol in 100ml of his breath. The legal limit is 35 mcg.

Prosecutor Jonathan Bambro told the court that Thomas was on his way to get breakfast at McDonald’s at Thinford near Spennymoor after a night of heavy boozing.

Although Thomas told Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court that he thought he would be alright to drive since he had stopped drinking several hours before, the solicitor ordered that he takes full responsibility for his actions.

Thomas had to pay a £215 fine, and faces a 20-month ban on driving, which can be reduced if he completes a drink driver’s rehabilitation scheme.
