Like A Super-Nova

The Tab sits down with the boys from Nova, one of Durham’s hottest nights out

Since its conception last year, Nova has firmly cemented it position as one of the most anticipated nights in Durham. This Thursday sees their most ambitious event yet, as they will be operating out of two separate clubs. The Tab sat down with the boys to see what we should expect:

So you’re using Loft and both floors of Studio – a bold move. It sounds very exciting, but what was the thought process behind the decision?

It’s a shame that Academy shut down since Bondax was such an amazing night. We do prefer the vibe at Loft but it comes the cost of hectic crowds. Having three rooms massively alleviates this and gives people a bit more room to party. But most importantly, our musical interests are incredibly varied and we want to cater for the tastes of as many people as possible.

What types of music are we going to be enjoying?

Our good friends set up Soul Train this term. Funk and Disco is timeless and everyone loves to get funky so it’s a pleasure to have them hosting Studio 1. Expect to see some similar scenes

Studio 2 is hosted by Jamrock DJs playing Reggae, Jungle and D&B all night long. We have a big passion for roots inspired music – it sends out a message of positivity and it makes you want to party whatever mood you’re in. These tracks will give you an idea of what you’ll expect to hear.

Did you ever think when starting off that Nova would be as successful as it has become?

Honestly, no. We’re so pleased that we’ve had such a good response. NOVA originated because we felt that there was a serious lack of alternative music in Durham. We’re really passionate about the music we play out and so it’s incredible that so many people do share our appreciation.

This Thursday Nova is set to take over both Loft and Studio

How do you feel this last term in particular has gone?

This term’s been incredible. It’s made us realise that we need to keep our nights interesting and varied – we don’t want to bore you. One of the biggest changes this year was the idea of having multiple rooms. We appreciate that people have different musical tastes and ultimately we want to create a night where everyone can enjoy themselves to a broad variety of music.

The fact that we’ve been fortunate enough to keep on getting the crowds in means that we can invest more in our parties and make NOVA bigger and better. This means getting in artists for each night rather than having purely resident nights as well investing in the best soundsystems that we can get.

This Thursday will be the biggest night yet for you boys – what does the future hold?

As we said before – we’ll be investing so much more so expect bigger names and better parties…
