DUHC M1s continue unbeaten streak
They’ve gone 13 straight games unbeaten and now they’re only aiming for one thing: the BUCS Championship. TOM MILLS finds out just how well DUHC’s M1s are doing…
Forget football’s Invincibles, squash’s Jahangir Khan or boxing’s Rocky Marciano. Durham University Hockey Club’s Men’s 1st XI are leading an undefeated charge of their own to match any other.
Unbeaten since November (their only loss of the season) the Men’s 1st XI have now gone 13 matches without defeat. As the season enters the business end, the team is in great shape for an assault on the BUCS championship.
They’re on the charge for a BUCS trophy
With two games to spare they clinched the Northern Prem title, securing their place in the knockout rounds, completing the group stage of the BUCS competition undefeated.
This Wednesday they face Bath in the BUCS quarter-final. Hugh Robinson, the captain, expects it to be a tough encounter but claims, “we are confident we can win”.
The run so far has been extremely successful and backs up the captain’s confidence. Durham has already beaten tough sides like Loughborough and Birmingham home and away whilst they managed a win and draw against last year’s champions Sheffield Hallam.

The team will look to continue this great run against Bath who came 4th in the Southern Prem.
The team also competes in a weekend league, the National League North. This is one division below the very best teams in the country and so has proven great competition. Durham has played well even if many of the lesser teams “park the bus” according to Robinson.
