Cuth’s freshers lived with dead rat for a YEAR

Freshers lived with a smelly dead rat for a year and were only given free Formal tickets the following term as compensation.

The house, part of St. Cuthbert’s Society, was so caked in asbestos the dead rat’s carcass couldn’t be remove by college staff.

House 13 on the Bailey began smelling after the rat had died beneath floorboards at the bottom of the house.

The house was warned how because of the asbestos found in the first floor room, the rat could not be removed as the Freshers would all have to be moved.

Although the rat wasn’t fully removed until the Summer vacation, the college staff sent out an email this time last year saying: “During the Easter vacation, the University Estates Department were able to remove some of the dead vermin from below the floorboards.

“The smell has improved in some areas of the building, but still persists in the lobby area.

“It isn’t possible at this time to further investigate the area due to the restrictions associated with the asbestos material.”

One ex-resident told The Tab: “We didn’t even find the rat, we just smelt it. The smell just properly hit you in the corridor.

“In all fair does, they handled it quite well.”

JCR President Millie Tanner said: “No comment.”

At least they got a free meal out of it.
