Which Christmas Song is Your College?
In memory of that day it snowed
It's winter. While we all know what flavour of crisp our uni is by now, the greatest question has yet to be answered. If your College were a Christmas Song, which one would it be? You'll be fine – so long as you're not in John Snow.
Chad's – Walking in a Winter Wonderland (Doris Day)
Ah, the perfect festive song: delicate, sweet and pretty. Chad's, if you were a melody…we used only the good notes. Yes, we all envy you.
Collingwood – All I Want For Christmas Is You (Mariah Carey)
People will be fighting over this one til 25th December but Collingwood you have been given the honour. Why? You appeal to the masses, you cater to the tastes of the multitude, and what's more? You know it.
Castle – God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (Annie Lennox)
Traditional but snazzy. Lennox jazzes up this old classic to make it somehow still relevant in the 21st century. Everybody loves a good old classic hymn.
Aidan's – Christmas Is All Around (Billy Mack, Love Actually)
You're explicit, wild and unpredictable. In so many ways you shouldn't work but somehow you do. And you can "particularly enjoy the incredible crassness of the moment we try to squeeze an extra syllable into the fourth line"…
"If you REALLY LOVE Christmas, c'mon and let it snow…ouch".
Mary's – Sleigh Ride (The Ronettes)
You have the perfect runway for Santa's sleigh to land on, and when it snows, the grounds around your college are honestly the most Instagrammable of all. Many a sleigh ride can be enjoyed.
Trevs – Mary's Boy Child (Boney M)
Different, individual, quirky, often skipped over on the Christmas Hits CD….but still loved (for the most part).
John's – O Holy Night (The Canadian Tenors)
Because your lovely chapel's acoustics were just made for this much-loved carol. Bless you, John's.
Grey – White Christmas (Bing Crosby)
You are proud of your college and you're a classic. The Grey firework display never disappointed – and that is why we've given you a timeless gem. Bravo.
Van Mildert – Do You Wanna Build a Snowman? (Princess Anna, Frozen)
Yes the number of snow-penises we've seen outside your college over the years is verging on extreme. And every year the…erm…artists seem to be paying more attention to details, desperately striving to make their phallic snow sculptures as realistic as possible.
Hatfield – Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (The Supremes)
Everyone laughs and calls you names. But deep down you know it's because you're the one who's going to be leading Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve. Hold on to that Hat (field).
Jo Bo – Walking In The Air (Aled Jones)
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Oh no – wait, it's Josephine Butler at the top of the hill… as you were. We have a respect for the treacherous hike that faces you every day. It's true, we do gaze open-mouthed, taken by surprise, and nobody down below believes their eyes.
Cuthbert's Society – The Christmas Queen (Miss Piggy)
Often forgotten, and in some cases never even heard of….But well worth a listen during the festive season.
Hild Bede – Do They Know It's Christmas? (Band Aid)
Because…do you know? Do you really know? You have your own side of Durham, a side many of us never go so far as to wander into. We're not sure if you got the memo this year?
